Frontier Sets: A Partitioning Scheme to Enable Scalable Virtual Environments

چکیده

We present a new spatial partitioning scheme called frontier sets. Frontier sets build on the notion of a potentially visible set (PVS) [ARB90, TS91]. In a PVS a world is sub-divided into cells and for each cell all the other cells that can be seen are computed. Frontier sets represents regions of mutual invisibility. One frontier in a frontier set considers pairs of cells, A and B. It lists two sets of cells, FAB and FBA. From no cell in FAB is any cell in FBA visible and vice-versa. We have used frontier sets to investigate peer-to-peer networking schemes for networked virtual environments. Preliminary investigation of simulations within the Quake II game engine shows that frontiers have significant promise and may allow a new class of scalable peer-to-peer game infrastructures to emerge.

Enabling Scalability by Partitioning Virtual Environments Using Frontier Sets

We present a class of partitioning scheme that we have called frontier sets. Frontier sets build on the notion of a potentially visible set (PVS) (Airey, Rohlf & Brooks, 1990) (Teller & Sequin, 1991). In a PVS, a world is sub-divided into cells and for each cell all the other cells that can be seen are computed. In contrast, a frontier set considers pairs of cells, A and B. For each pair, it li...

Improving Scalability Using Sub-Regions in Distributed Virtual Environments

As a distributed virtual environment (DVE) grows in size, a key aspect to consider is scalability. One of approaches to enabling a DVE system scalable is a region partition. Most DVE systems have regions disjoint and allow interactions between users in regions adjacent to each other. However, users of these systems have to be always informed of the status of all the users in neighbor regions th...

Robust graphics streaming in walkthrough virtual environments via wireless channels

A graphics streaming system for walkthrough virtual environments is presented that facilitates reliable delivery and interactive browse of 3D models via wireless channels. Models are compressed by a partitioning-based progressive mesh compression algorithm to enable decorrelation of partitions and offer finer granularity. Then, the data of the virtual world are prioritized and organized accordi...

A version numbering scheme for informational objects used in VM live migration

Various numbering schemes are used to track different versions and revisions of files, software packages, and documents. One major challenge in this regard is the lack of an all-purpose, adaptive, comprehensive and efficient standard. To resolve the challenge, this article presents Quadruple Adaptive Version Numbering Scheme. In the proposed scheme, the version identifier consists of four integ...

Predictive Interest Management: An Approach to Managing Message Dissemination for Distributed Virtual Environments

Interest management aims to overcome limited network resources to provide a distributed virtual environment (DVE) that is scalable in terms of number of users and virtual world complexity (number of objects). Interest management limits interactions between objects in a virtual world by only allowing objects to communicate their actions to other objects that fall within their influence. An impor...
